Feature: Unique Bridge Designs in Europe

Spanish firm bgstudio has completed Pasarela del Postiguet, a lovely looping bridge connecting Alicante to the beach. The design is sleek, and LED lights illuminate the structure’s curved form at night. The architects call it “a modern streak of light.”

Also recently completed in Spain, the Arganzuela Footbridge was designed by Dominique Perrault. This striking conical structure is situated over the Manzanares River in Madrid.

And no feature on notable bridge architecture could be complete without a work by Spanish architect (- perhaps my favorite architect), Santiago Calatrava. Truly, any of them would do – they are all uniquely amazing. When I was briefly in Ireland this past winter, I gawked at Dublin’s harp-shaped Samuel Beckett Bridge, designed by Calatrava. Here is a snapshot I took.
