Abandoned Amusements

Up for a bit of urban adventuring? Check out Spreepark, a long since abandoned amusement park in what was formerly East Berlin.

It seems that in January 2002, the park’s owner – a Mr. Norbert Witte – and his family moved to Lima, Peru. Authorities allowed them to ship six of the park’s attractions from Germany, with the understanding that these were to undergo repairs and become part of a new park in Peru. Back in Germany, what remained of Spreepark went under as the debts piled higher. The Witte family’s new Peruvian park failed to take off. Norbert Witte would soon after be sentenced to seven years of jail time for trying to smuggle around $10mil in cocaine back to Germany inside the flying carpet ride.

You may recognize some of Spreepark’s ruins – parts were used in the recent – and marvelous, if I may – movie, “HANNA.”
