At 25, Toronto-based artist Amy Shackleton has already developed a uniquely identifiable style, as well as a process that must have taken a considerable amount of trial and error to perfect. You see, Shackleton paints entirely without paintbrushes. Instead, she squeezes a bit of paint onto a canvas and then lets gravity take over – although she interferes at times, ensuring that a drip of paint goes a particular direction by guiding it with a piece of string or manually turning the canvas.
