Into the Existential Wilds

Come – walk with the sad, lost pilot. He’s seen so many things – strange things, beautiful things. The desolate landscape that spreads out before him, encircling him, reminds of solar systems visited and of planets claimed, explored, and exploited. So many space walks – and this might be his last.

Polish photographer Dominik Smialowski‘s series, “The Pilot’s Melancholy,” is filled with landscapes that could, like those of our Moon, be described as ‘beautiful desolation.’ Throughout it all, a lone, woeful figure, his face obscured by his helmut, wanders about in search of answers to his deepest, darkest questions. Does he find what he seeks? Follow this pilot into the existential wilds.
