A Bookstore in a 15th Century Cathedral, designed by BK.Architecten

Wouldn’t you love to visit a bookstore as uniquely beautiful as this? Opened this summer in Zwolle, The Netherlands, Waanders in de Broeren is a new bookstore designed by studio BK.Architecten. Of course, as you may have noticed, some of the bookstore’s architecture is much, much older. In fact, what you are looking at is a re-purposed 15th century cathedral.

BK.Architecten took great care to preserve the 547-year-old building’s original stained glass windows, pipe organ, ceiling paintings, and arches. Somehow – and I’m sorry to say that I’m not sure how they managed this – the architects were also able to install all three levels of the store in such a way that they may be removed from the cathedral in the future without causing damage to the historic structure.
